About Markdown Notes

Who publishes Markdown Notes, how the guide is written, and its relationship to Ember Notes and Cindermark.

Markdown Notes is a practical reference for people who write and keep notes in Markdown. It covers the concepts that tend to matter after the first few notes: readable source, files, syncing, attachments, export, and the limits of a format.

It is published by René DeAnda, the maker of Ember Notes. Ember is a native Markdown notes app for iPhone and iPad, with a Mac app currently in beta. This relationship is disclosed because it should be clear when a product mentioned here is a first-party example.

The site is not an app-review publication or a ranking of competing notes products. The guides aim to be useful whether or not you use Ember. Where a technical fact needs a reference, we favor standards and primary platform documentation. Where Markdown implementations differ, we say so.

The live preview tool uses Cindermark, the open-source Rust parser behind Ember's editor. That is a concrete example of how a parser can help make Markdown easier to edit. It is not a claim that every Markdown tool renders exactly the same way.

If you are starting from scratch, begin with What is Markdown? or What are Markdown notes?. If you already write Markdown, the guide index can take you straight to files, GitHub, iCloud, and export. Read the privacy page for the local tool and analytics details.
